Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On the DRC side the park takes the name of Virunga National Park. From the latest census there are slightly more than 1,000 mountain gorillas left (http://www.igcp.org/gorillas) and the park is the home of 604 of them. The park is also known as the base of the zoologist Dian Fossey that dedicated her life to studying the gorillas and protecting them from poachers. Dian Fossey was murdered in 1985 and the case remains open.
